David Duguid is Operations Director with Aurora Energy Services. He's a Mechanical Engineer who initially undertook process scopes across new oil and gas construction and brownfield projects across Australia and latterly the UK.
Aurora Energy Services provide onshore and offshore installation, inspection and maintenance services, and skills training for those transitioning from oil and gas.
We chatted to David about his career based in the Highlands and Islands, read on to hear why he made the move back.
How long have you lived in the Highlands and have you lived or worked anywhere else?
"I grew up in Highlands and left at 17 to study. I've worked primarily offshore on installations in Australia, Mainland Europe and the Middle East."
Tell us a bit about your business. What do you do, how did you get into this sector and why did you choose here to set up the new renewable energy training facility?
"Aurora is a multidisciplinary energy services organisation with a focus on renewables and infrastructure, with engineering, fabrication, construction, site services, inspections & maintenance capabilities, alongside having the first and only dedicated Renewable Energy Training centre in the Highlands.
"The Highlands already contributes a significant proportion of the UK’s installed renewable generation and it's set to become a powerhouse with projects such as Scotwind, INTOG, ASTI and the Great Glen Pumped Hydro schemes, alongside the creation of the green freeport.
"All of this will need an immense amount of skilled labour and it's critical that we start upskilling immediately."
What do you love about living and working in the region?
"The Highlands is an area of natural beauty with an abundance of outdoor pursuits to try, and friendly people.
"Based upon traditional industries of farming and fishing, the people have a pragmatic outlook, great work ethic and can-do attitude."
Why do you think other people should consider moving to the region for a career in renewables?
"There is an exciting and challenging 'job for life' in renewables in the Highlands, coupled with a quality of life which is hard to match."
