Shetland mussel firm to become more efficient and greener with HIE funding

Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has appointed R K Joinery (Skye) Ltd for the development, following a public tendering process.
The new units have been designed by Threesixty Architecture to meet modern building standards, provide a range of internal flexible space options, and to maximise the efficiency of the internal areas.
Air-source heat pumps will enhance their environmental credentials and contribute towards net zero.
This project forms part of wider investment by the agency to create flexible workspaces in rural locations around the region. Broadford was selected as the initial development based on existing level of interest.
Alastair Nicolson, HIE’s area manager for Lochaber, Skye and Wester Ross, said:
“We’re delighted to be able to award this contract to R K Joinery, a Skye business, and look forward to seeing work started on site.
“There’s a lot of interest in commercial premises on the island, from both local firms looking to expand and from companies looking to create a base on Skye.
“The new units we’re developing are designed to meet different commercial activity and office space needs.”

“We are really pleased to be working with Highlands and Islands Enterprise to develop the business units in Broadford. We are looking forward to starting construction in December, with a completion date of December 2023, which will help meet the demand from local businesses that want to expand and stay in the area.”
