New studio for South Uist filmmaker
A production company based on a croft in South Uist is expanding.
TrixPixMedia is led by filmmaker and artist Beatrix Wood and makes documentaries, visual art and online content for local and international audiences.
Currently working with a team of 15 freelancers, TrixPix is looking to generate more employment from its new multimedia studio in Drimsdale.
The business secured a £33,950 funding package from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) for a multimedia studio with an edit suite and a studio for painting, filming, writing and archiving. Support has also been provided by the Sealladh na Beinne Mòire Community Fund, Leader Innse Gall and Business Gateway.
HIE’s award also supports an international marketing and branding campaign to promote TrixPix’s productions and secure new customers and sales.
Now complete, the new studio provides Beatrix with a suitable workplace to expand the business. TrixPix currently employs local creative people from Uist, other parts of the UK and Finland and is open to hear from people who have suitable skills, or are keen to learn or join the team.
Originally from Manchester, Beatrix previously ran a production company in London and Cornwall for 20 years making award winning international documentaries and cultural projects across Europe.
Alongside her creative work, Beatrix is a crofter and breeds native cattle with her family and have lived on the island for eight years. Life on the croft inspires her work and is an essential part of her creative process. The physical work opens her mind and gives her new ideas to take forward.
Beatrix, said: “We are hitting the ground running as we move into the studio and straight into the fine cut of a 3 x 1 hour documentary series for BBC Alba about South Uist, then the edit of ‘The Power of Yoik’, a documentary co-production with six other European countries, followed by a visit from three artists I met on the Luminate/A-N residency last year. Alongside this, we are supporting work experience for young people, locally and internationally.”
John Macdonald, account manager at HIE’s Outer Hebrides team, said: “We have worked closely with partners such as Business Gateway and Leader to develop this innovative project set in a rural location. Beatrix puts the Outer Hebrides on the map by linking with international businesses, commissioners and television networks. We are pleased to be supporting this venture and look forward to continuing to work with the Beatrix as she implements the business’s growth plans.”
