Bringing history to life
The Highlanders’ Museum at Fort George in Ardersier is the home to heritage relating to Highland regiments. With over 50,000 artefacts it brings to life the history of the Highland soldier from Culloden to the present day.
We've been working with the Museum on its digital journey since it secured funding from the 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology Digital Adoption Scheme, to digitise its collection and archive, enhancing access to the public.
Highlanders' Museum and the CUPIDO project
As part of the CUPIDO project, the Museum is now working with the University of St Andrews to transform the visitor experience, and how they can use technology to get the most from the available materials.
This includes turning mobile devices into virtual museums, and opening up immersive and 3D digital representations of collections relating to World War 2. Digital panoramas will let visitors see objects in the context that they would have been used in. 3D digitisation of objects let us look at items in the round, zooming in on details and accessing new interpretation. There are also plans for interactive touch screens for visitors to access 3D objects and narrative about items' historical context.
