The funding for Flexible Technology Limited (FTL) was approved by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
The company’s 38 employees have continued to work at its plant in Rothesay, playing a key role in the supply of ventilators across the world due to the COVID-19 crisis. It is expecting to produce around 100,000 flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs) for two of the world’s leading manufacturers of actuators, which are critical in the production of ventilators.
FTL was established in 1980 and produces a range of flexible circuit, flex-rigid circuit, multilayer and printed circuit boards to various design requirements.
As a long-established firm and an important employer on Bute, the firm was able to respond quickly to an urgent international need for ventilator parts and their expertise in this high-tech field proved vital. Employees pulled out all the stops to meet increased demand while a series of distancing, health and PPE measures were implemented to reduce risk.
The funding will be used to help the island’s key employer to recover after the last three months and will make a substantial difference to the business. It will help it to improve productivity and efficiency, which it otherwise would not be able to do and will support it in efforts to respond to a rapidly developing marketplace in a high value supply chain.
FTL is a HIE account managed business that HIE has been working with closely through the pandemic providing ongoing engagement and exploring potential future opportunities in new markets that have arisen as a consequence of Covid-19.
The Pivotal Enterprise Resilience Fund was managed by Scotland’s three enterprise agencies on behalf of Scottish Government. There was a high demand for the fund which received more than 5,000 applications Scotland-wide. Grants totalling almost £20m have been approved by HIE to 372 businesses across the Highlands and Islands.
