  • Starting salary: £64,104 per annum. Potential salary progression to £75,435 per annum. Excellent pension and benefits package.
  • Contract/hours: Permanent, full-time, 35 hours per week.

Are you a seasoned finance professional with a knack for leadership and a passion for driving financial excellence? Do you hold a professional accountancy qualification and have a proven track record of managing financial budgets and people at a senior level?

Join us as the Head of Finance and help us make a contribution to the Highlands and Islands economy. Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, you will be responsible for the overall effective management and delivery of HIE’s financial resourcing and budgets. You will lead the HIE Finance Team across our Inverness and Benbecula offices, ensuring financial services activity aligns with HIE’s strategic and operational delivery.

This is a full time, permanent role ideally based in Inverness, with the option of hybrid working.  

The role

This is a senior role in HIE working closely with the Director of Corporate Services and HIE’s Leadership Team. You will lead budget discussions and negotiations, ensuring alignment with HIE's strategic priorities, and manage HIE’s financial outturn to meet expenditure, income, and efficiency targets. You will ensure that best practice governance, processes, and internal controls underpin HIE’s financial management, and oversee the preparation and sign-off of HIE’s annual accounts to ensure transparency and accuracy. Additionally, you will provide financial expertise and guidance on key strategic projects, develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key external stakeholders, and lead and manage the wider finance team to promote high standards of customer service and effective team working.

The person

We are looking for a candidate with a professional accountancy qualification and proven effectiveness in operating at a senior level, managing financial budgets, and people management. The ideal candidate will have experience in business development and working in high governance environments, along with strong leadership, negotiating, and influencing skills. Excellent reporting, analytical, and presentation skills are essential, as is the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are also crucial. Desirable qualifications include an MBA or leadership/management qualification, working knowledge of the Scottish Public Finance Manual and relevant treasury and government accounting requirements, and in-depth knowledge of the Highlands and Islands area and economy.
