The annual awards, organised by Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for the environmental and land-based sector, recognise and reward outstanding learners and raise awareness of the many career and training opportunities that exist for all ages within the land-based industries.
Steven Grant, a Ghillie from Corrour Estate, won both the Overall Runner-up and Regional Winner for Highlands and Islands Area prizes, taking home a cash prize of £600. Steven has completed the SVQ Level 2 in Gamekeeping with North Highland College and was nominated for his outstanding commitment to training.
Chris Robertson, a Forest Machine Operator from Lochgilphead was awarded the ‘Modern Apprentice of the Year’ prize and received a £350 cash prize. Chris, who is employed by Mid Argyll Forestry Commission, was one of the first in the UK to complete the Modern Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber.
Farm worker Aileen McLellan of Port Charlotte, Isle of Islay, was amongst the 12 finalists to receive a £100 cash prize and a medal of achievement. Aileen, who works on her family’s farm ‘Kilchiaran’, is studying for the Modern Apprenticeship in Agriculture through Oatridge College.
A total of 17 finalists from across Scotland were recognised at the awards ceremony held at the Huntingtower Hotel in Perthshire on the 15th of February.
